An unnoticed outage: a monitoring checklist for side projects
A hypothetical scenario
This is an example, not a customer incident or a measured AntDock result.
Imagine a side project goes offline in the afternoon. Its owner returns the next morning and discovers an 18-hour outage. A growing log directory filled the disk; the application process could no longer recover. These times and circumstances are illustrative.
Check the site and its dependencies
Create an HTTP monitor for the public homepage and another for an API health endpoint. A cached homepage can remain available while the API fails. Choose check intervals and alert conditions appropriate to your service; notification time depends on those settings and the delivery channel.
Watch the server
Install the AntDock server agent to inspect CPU, memory, disk and network metrics. Review individual partitions as well as the total disk capacity. Set thresholds based on your workload and investigate pressure before it becomes an outage. Measure the agent’s overhead on your own server.
Test a notification channel
Connect a channel you check regularly and send a test notification. In AntDock, notification channels and alert rules are configured separately: select the intended channel on the rule. Confirm the channel receives both a test and a controlled alert before relying on it.
Review visitors separately
A Web tracker can show traffic and browser errors when installed and permitted. Traffic alone does not prove that a service is available, and browser errors alone do not identify the server failure. Use the monitor’s checks and server measurements as additional evidence.
A practical checklist
- Monitor the homepage and an API endpoint.
- Check the server’s individual disk partitions.
- Choose and test an alert channel.
- Verify the rule’s conditions and channel selection.
- Review the incident after recovery and adjust the settings.
